Thomas Colbert Carter (born July 17, 1953)〔()〕 is an American film and television director known for ''Swing Kids'', ''Save the Last Dance'' with Julia Stiles, and ''Coach Carter'' with Samuel L. Jackson.
As an actor, Carter is probably best known for his work on the television series ''The White Shadow'', playing James "Hollywood" Hayward, a high school basketball star with a high IQ.
== Personal life ==
Thomas Carter was born July 17, 1953 in Austin, Texas. After high school graduation Carter would enroll and attend Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre in 1974. Following his educational career, in 1992 Carter was presented with the “Distinguished Alumnus Award” from Texas State University.
